Emilio Garza, Ed.D Dr Emilio Garza has taught language arts and mathematics at the elementary and middle school level in the Kern and San Luis Obispo Counties. He has also taught elementary bilingual education classes with high numbers of English learners. In a K-12 school district in San Luis Obispo County, Dr. Garza established the Independent Studies Program for grades 7-12 where he was also a teacher. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a “minor” in Mathematics, a Masters in Bilingual Education and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction (K-12) with emphasis in language arts and teaching reading to English language learners. He also holds a Life Standard Teaching Credential (K-9), Bilingual Certificate of Competency (Spanish/English), Life Administrative Services Credential (K-12) and a Life Community College Credential. He currently is an Assistant Professor with the School of Education at CSU, Bakersfield where he teaches in the Advanced Educational Studies Department. Dr. Emilio Garza has worked in two county offices of education: Santa Barbara County Office of Education and Fresno County Office of Education. He coordinated Migrant Education while in Santa Barbara County, but also serviced San Luis Obispo County. In the Fresno County Office of Education as Curriculum Coordinator, he trained over 100 teachers in the area of the ELD and bilingual instructional strategies. Dr .Emilio Garza was also Assistant Director of Federal and State Projects with the Lucia Mar Unified School District of 11,000 students and with 30 percent English language learners. Dr. Garza also served as Middle School Principal in the Guadalupe Union School District, a small, mostly Hispanic school district where he worked closely with the Mathematics and English Language Arts staff to develop their strategies and pacing charts so that students met the standards in those levels. Dr. Garza was also the Director of Curriculum for Parlier Unified and then was named Superintendent of this K-12 school district. Dr. Garza’s research is on Spanish reading and transferable skills necessary for English reading and he has also compiled several booklets on being an effective coach in K-12 classrooms. His most recent research includes teaching “academic language” in the content areas of math and science in high school. EDUCATION
