Irene Borrego, Ed.D
Associate Consultant
Dr. Irene Borrego (bilingually English/Spanish fluent), BCLAD Coordinator
at CSU Bakersfield, brings to this team a variety of experiences as a
Preschool -12 bilingual (English/Spanish) teacher/educator,
elementary special day class teacher (all 14 years in high priority
schools), adult ESL teacher, elementary learning director and
principal, administrator and instructional leader (where she participated in
a State of California Coordinated Compliance Review Consortium as a Review
Team Member for 3 years in Fresno County). Dr. Borrego was an administrator
at a Fresno County elementary and intermediate School Both schools were
recently identified as IIUSP schools (no deciles scores are available for those
years). She has been extensively involved in conducting parent education
training (for dual language English/Spanish and School Site Council meetings
where she assisted in educating Spanish dominant parents), in all of her
leadership roles as an educator. Dr. Borrego was instrumental in writing and
managing a grant for the funding of an additional preschool in Fresno County
where she was Director. Her credentials include: a Specialist
Bilingual-Cross Cultural Emphasis credential/Ryan Multiple Subjects,
Learning Handicapped Special Education credential, a Clear
Administrative Services credential, a Masters degree in Bilingual
Education and a Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership.
At CSU Bakersfield, Dr. Borrego is Associate Professor and teaches courses
in the Teacher Education program including coursed specific to literacy and
English Learner methodology and the BCLAD, Teaching of Reading in the Bilingual
Setting. She holds the title of BCLAD Coordinator for the Multiple
Subjects Emphasis Credential Program. Half of her responsibilities are field
based where she supervises student teachers and collaborates with
superintendents, principals, and master teachers in a variety of school
settings and responsibilities regarding supervision of CSUB student teachers,
(K-12) dual language, immersion classes and special education classes. She is
also involved with Dr. Hirai in researching “Academic Language”
instructional strategies which impact student achievement.
